La antigua biblioteca de internetBienvenidos al archivo web más grande del mundoEn el corazón del barrio Richmond, en San Francisco, a pocas cuadras del Presidio y al pie del Golden Gate, se alza un imponente edificio blanco con ocho columnas góticas que evocan la antigua Biblioteca de Alejandría. Lo que en 1923 fue la First Church of Christ, Scientist —un templo dedicado a la fe y la sanación espiritual— se convirtió en 1996 en el inesperado santuario del Internet Archive, una organización sin ánimo de lucro que ha digitalizado y preservado más de un billón de páginas web. Fundado por el visionario Brewster Kahle, este espacio —mitad sagrado, mitad profano— alberga no solo servidores vibrantes, sino también un testimonio vivo de cómo la humanidad cruzó de la era analógica a la digital, resguardando el conocimiento colectivo en medio de una red global efímera. Ya es una biblioteca “antigua” La elección del edificio no fue casual. Kahle, un ingeniero de software que revolucionó la web temprana en los años 90 con Alexa Internet, vio en la fachada neoclásica un eco simbólico de las bibliotecas antiguas. Tras el cierre de la iglesia debido a la disminución de feligreses, el lugar se transformó en un vasto archivo digital: vitrales que proyectan luces multicolores sobre mesas de escaneo, un órgano de viento silenciado por el zumbido de los discos duros y un altar principal convertido en una sala simbólica de servidores. Hoy, con más de 200 empleados —ingenieros, bibliotecarios y voluntarios—, este espacio preserva no solo sitios web, sino millones de libros, películas, canciones y programas informáticos, todos accesibles gratuitamente en archive.org. En noviembre de 2025 celebraron su página número un billón archivada, un hito que resalta la urgencia de preservar un internet que, en promedio, cambia por completo cada 100 días. La magia operativa ocurre en los rincones menos visibles. En el segundo piso, máquinas hechas a medida digitalizan libros página por página, un proceso transmitido en vivo por YouTube con música lo-fi para que cualquiera pueda seguirlo en tiempo real. Tocadiscos reproducen vinilos de las décadas de 1920 y 1940, mientras consolas satelitales y de microfilmes restauran medios obsoletos. En el centro está la Wayback Machine, un rastreador que recorre toda la web cada dos meses, capturando 380 mil millones de sitios en instantáneas temporales. No son simples copias de seguridad: son portales a versiones del pasado, como ver la página web de la Casa Blanca en 1996 o un foro de 2001 antes de desaparecer. Kahle insiste en que este trabajo no es nostalgia, sino protección contra la “pudrición de enlaces” y la manipulación histórica, especialmente en una era de desinformación y destrucción sistemática de datos por razones políticas. Un ejército de arcilla custodia el conocimiento El santuario principal, con sus techos abovedados, alberga un detalle excéntrico: más de 100 estatuas de casi un metro de altura que representan a empleados con al menos tres años de servicio, inspiradas en el ejército de terracota chino. Estas figuras de arcilla, moldeadas y pintadas, custodian servidores colocados deliberadamente sobre el antiguo altar para recordar a los visitantes que el conocimiento es un bien colectivo. “Queremos que la gente entienda que todos somos parte de esta protección compartida”, explica Kahle durante los recorridos gratuitos semanales. La atmósfera cyberpunk —con hackers en sudaderas y bibliotecarios en tenis— contrasta con la solemnidad gótica, creando un espacio que late con espíritu comunitario. Las celebraciones por grandes hitos, como el billón de páginas archivadas, reúnen a editores de Wikipedia y activistas digitales que ven el archivo como un baluarte contra la corporativización de la web. Desafíos gigantescos La misión enfrenta enormes retos. El 85% de los servidores reales se encuentra en un almacén suburbano, y su consumo energético rivaliza con el de una ciudad mediana, lo que plantea tensiones con los objetivos de descarbonización. Legalmente, las batallas con editoriales como Hachette por el préstamo digital de libros obligaron a realizar cambios, pero la decisión de apelación de 2023 a favor del Archive reafirmó su estatus como biblioteca pública. En 2025, con la orden de la Casa Blanca de eliminar páginas web gubernamentales, el papel del Archive se volvió crítico: capturó mil millones de documentos federales en cuestión de semanas, preservando datos que pudieron haber desaparecido por decisión de actores políticos. Kahle advierte que, sin estas salvaguardas, la historia digital queda reducida a lo que las corporaciones deciden conservar. Un universo de contenido preservado La diversidad del material archivado ilustra su enorme alcance. Más allá de la web, el Archive alberga 15 millones de pistas musicales, 500.000 películas y 3 millones de programas de televisión, desde conciertos en vivo hasta videojuegos de los años 80. Proyectos como Urban Archive digitalizan historia local, como fotografías de San Francisco anteriores al terremoto de 1906, mientras que Open Library permite “prestar” libros escaneados. En América Latina, el sitio ha sido esencial para preservar portales culturales efímeros, desde archivos indígenas hasta noticias de dictaduras que gobiernos intentaron borrar. Visitantes como Annie Rauwerda, una influyente figura de Wikipedia, describen el lugar como “el internet no corporativo que nunca ves: apasionado, comunitario y un poco caótico”.
