A New Diaspora Pursues the American Dream in Mexico City and Medellin

When a New Beginning for Some Becomes Displacement for Others

Not long ago, one might have thought that a person crossing borders in search of a different life were people from less affluent countries; today, in Mexico City, many Americans are pursuing their own version of the American Dream, and the arrival of these migrants echoes a similar phenomenon in Medellín. This article explores how migration transforms not only those who arrive, but also the locals. The Mexican Mirage of “Life Restart” Thousands of foreign women, many of them American, have made Mexico City their new home since the pandemic, seeking to reinvent themselves. As the New York Times reports, many women arrived with the idea of a “life reset”: they were escaping exhausting jobs or unsatisfying relationships and found in neighborhoods like Roma and Condesa a space to rebuild their lives. According to one of them, the Mexican capital became “a place where dreams come true.” They work as digital nomads, launching wellness businesses—saunas, therapy sessions, ice cream shops—and integrating into support networks. “Here, anyone can start anything,” one of them tells the NYT, pointing to the creative potential she found in her new city. But this flourishing also generates tensions: the same report notes that some Mexicans are protesting gentrification, arguing that English dominates the cafes and that rents have nearly doubled in just a few years. The contrast between this wave of migration and the cost to locals is stark: while some female entrepreneurs celebrate their newfound freedom, many Mexico City residents wonder if they are losing their sense of belonging. Graffiti reading “Gentrification is colonization!” appeared at some protests, and the tension became political. Medellín: The Digital Nomad's New Dream Spot Further south on the continent, Medellín is experiencing a similar transformation. According to the Medellín 365 website, the supply of short-term rentals has grown dramatically, and since 2020, Airbnb listings have increased by 66%, generating tens of millions of dollars for hosts. Likewise, as reported by The Real Deal, this boom coincides with the rise of "tourist apartments" built specifically for digital nomads, some with shared spaces, high-speed internet, and a sense of community. For foreigners, Medellín offers a mild climate, an attractive cost of living, and a vibrant cultural scene. Digital nomads enjoy a modern city with beautiful neighborhoods and services tailored to their lifestyles. But for many locals, this new demand comes at a high price. Rent per square meter has risen fast in desirable areas, and according to social media platforms and Medellín 365, residents have been displaced to outlying areas. In neighborhoods like El Poblado, Laureles, and Castilla, there is a prevailing fear of losing a sense of community as residential properties are converted into short-term rentals. Furthermore, according to Medellin.co, the city has responded with regulations: more than 1,700 properties operating without permits have been identified, and authorities have threatened fines and evictions. The local administration has argued that it is necessary to balance tourism with community life, especially to prevent problems such as noise, traffic, and illegal activities. Advantages for Newcomers… and Invisible Risks According to the NYT, for American women who migrated to Mexico City, the move has meant more than just saving money: it's a personal rebuilding. There, they are able to start businesses with a much smaller investment than they would need in the United States. The sense of community among migrants also offered them networks of emotional support. But it's not all ideal: many complain that they live in a bubble of comfort, isolated from the deeper realities of Mexico, and they are aware that their presence contributes to rising prices in their neighborhoods. Meanwhile in Medellín, digital nomads also enjoy clear benefits: co-living spaces, cultural events, and connections with local entrepreneurs. Their arrival has revitalized certain sectors and spurred investment. Even so, as reported by Medellín Advisors, some analysts warn that the model can have negative consequences: short-term housing reduces the availability of normal lease agreements, especially for young families. Many local residents are priced out of the market or forced to migrate to less expensive areas. Scores of residents have been silently displaced. Some move to neighboring municipalities, while others are forced to accept less secure or shared housing contracts. Those who remain suffer not only economically, but also socially: they lose lifelong neighbors, experience disruptions to their community fabric, and, in words reported by local media, feel that the city is slipping away from them. But what About the Locals? For the Mexican population living in Roma, Condesa, and other central neighborhoods, the presence of migrants has meant real pressure on rents. Families with a long history in these neighborhoods have seen their community change at an accelerated pace, and some wonder if they are selling their own homes in the name of a modernity that doesn't belong to them. On a symbolic level, the massive influx of foreigners has sparked a debate about identity, belonging, and urban colonization. Between Global Dreams and Transforming Cities Gentrification is not inevitable, but addressing it requires political will and smart regulations. In Mexico City, for example, the newspaper El País reports that a plan to curb exorbitant rent prices, implement a fair rent index, and strengthen tenant advocacy is currently under discussion. In Medellín, the government could promote the construction of affordable housing, regulate short-term rentals, and require that some projects for digital nomads allocate units to traditional leases for local residents. Furthermore, it would be valuable to foster a culture of reciprocity: that newcomers actively participate in the communities, share spaces and resources, and that the economic benefits do not remain in the hands of a few. Regulation should not be an obstacle but a tool for preserving the sense of community. The arrival of American women in Mexico City or digital nomads in Medellín speaks to a new dream: one that is freer, more creative, and more global. But this dream is also fraught with contradictions. Cities have always been territories in motion, but today that movement is marked by invisible tensions between those who arrive seeking a new beginning and those who feel they are losing the place they called home. The story being written in Mexico City and Medellín is not just about migration or digital tourism; it is about the delicate balance between opportunity and displacement. The big question is whether we will be able to design cities that welcome the world without expelling their own people.
