El espectáculo cromático del Otoño¿Por qué las hojas cambian de color y caen en esta estación?El otoño no solo anuncia el fin del verano; transforma los paisajes en una sinfonía de rojos, naranjas y dorados que parece sacada de una paleta de pintor impresionista. Pero detrás de este espectáculo visual se esconde un proceso biológico preciso, gobernado por la química de las plantas, la duración del día y la temperatura. Lejos de ser un simple “desvanecimiento”, el cambio de color de las hojas es una estrategia de supervivencia que las árvores deciduales han perfeccionado durante millones de años. En este artículo, exploraremos la ciencia detrás de la metamorfosis foliar, desde la clorofila hasta los carotenoides, pasando por el papel crucial de las antocianinas y el impacto del cambio climático en este fenómeno ancestral. El Árbol recibe la señal de que el invierno se acerca. La reducción de horas de luz inhibe la producción de clorofila, y el pigmento existente comienza a degradarse. Este mecanismo ahorra agua y energía durante el invierno, cuando las raíces no pueden absorber suficiente líquido del suelo congelado. En regiones templadas, hasta el 70 % del nitrógeno foliar se reabsorbe antes de la caída (Killingbeck, 1996).
