The figure of $70 billion has circulated widely in debates and analyses—but where does it actually come from? According to data from the U.S. Travel Association, this is not a direct loss in tourism revenue, but rather a travel trade deficit that reached nearly that amount in 2025, the first year of Trump’s second administration. This marks a dramatic shift: historically, the U.S. enjoyed a surplus in this sector, but factors such as high tariffs, immigration restrictions, and diplomatic tensions have reversed the trend.

Organizations like the World Travel & Tourism Council and Tourism Economics support this view, estimating losses in international visitor spending between $12.5 and $30 billion in that year alone, with projections indicating a larger cumulative impact when the full deficit is considered.
