BRAZIL - The Election Smackdown Is Here!

Brazil’s October 16–23 week features election preparations, cultural events, Carnival planning, and travel news.

Brazil is heading into one of the most consequential weeks of its political year. With the presidential runoff approaching, Carnival preparations beginning to spill into the streets, and new cultural events drawing attention across the country, Brazil offers visitors much more than its familiar postcard images of beaches and samba. For anyone considering a trip, this is a moment to understand the country's mood, discover what locals are doing, and plan ahead for the experiences that make Brazil distinctive.

🗳️ The Mood: Brazil Heads Toward Election Day

The biggest conversation in Brazil is politics. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, are preparing for the October 25 presidential runoff. Polls published October 16 suggest an exceptionally close contest. A PoderData survey reported the candidates tied at 50% of valid votes, while a CNT/MDA poll placed Flávio slightly ahead at 50.5% to Lula's 49.5%, both within the surveys' margins of error. The result remains uncertain. Source: UOL election coverage

Another political flashpoint is Dark Horse, a film about Jair Bolsonaro starring American actor Jim Caviezel. The production has become entangled in questions about its financing and allegations involving banker Daniel Vorcaro and Flávio Bolsonaro. Flávio has denied wrongdoing and described the financing as private. Investigators are examining the allegations; they should not be treated as established findings of guilt. The story has added another dimension to an already heated campaign. Source: Reuters reporting via UOL

For travelers, the practical takeaway is to expect political discussion to be prominent in the news and everyday conversations. The election itself does not mean visitors should automatically cancel their plans, but it is sensible to follow local reporting, avoid political demonstrations if tensions rise, and check transport arrangements around major public gatherings.

🎭 What's Happening This Week: São Paulo Gets Cultural

São Paulo has a particularly family-friendly cultural offering this weekend. Viradinha Cultural 2026, taking place October 17–18, brings approximately 400 free children's activities to venues across the city, including music, theater, and circus performances. Highlights include the children's clown duo Patati Patatá, a performance by the Heliópolis Symphony Orchestra at the Theatro Municipal on Sunday, and a vinyl-launch event by the band Fera Neném at Centro Cultural São Paulo. Art lovers can also visit “Mundo Pequeno” at Centro Cultural Fiesp on Avenida Paulista. The exhibition features 45 photographs by British photographer Martin Parr, whose work humorously examines mass tourism and the ways people document their travels. It runs through April 4, 2027, making it a worthwhile stop even for visitors arriving after this week.

For a different perspective, the exhibition “Margem de Dentro” at Sesc Ipiranga brings together works by 26 artists from Brazil's Northeast, Southeast, and South. The show explores cultural expressions and people often overlooked in conventional historical narratives and continues through May 9, 2027. Both exhibitions offer a useful reminder that Brazil's cultural life extends well beyond its internationally famous festivals.

🥁 The Travel Buzz: Carnival Is Already Taking Shape

In Rio de Janeiro, the countdown to Carnival 2027 is beginning well before the main parades. Samba schools are starting their rehearsals, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the tradition in neighborhood settings rather than only from the Sambadrome grandstands.

One option is Paraíso do Tuiuti's street rehearsal at Campo de São Cristóvão, scheduled on Mondays from 7 p.m., beginning October 5. These street rehearsals, known as ensaios de rua, are free and open to the public. Other schools are announcing their schedules gradually, so visitors should confirm individual dates before making plans. Source: Carnival Rio's 2027 rehearsal guide

For a more immersive experience, visitors can look into samba-school rehearsals at a school's own venue, called a quadra. Depending on the school and event, admission may be free or paid. These gatherings offer a closer look at the music, choreography, costumes, and community that sustain Carnival throughout the year.

The free technical rehearsals at the Marquês de Sapucaí Sambadrome are scheduled for January 23, 24, 30, and 31, 2027. These are useful dates for travelers who want to see the parade preparations without purchasing tickets to the main Carnival performances. Source: UOL Carnival coverage

📍 Beyond Rio: Follow the Events, Not Just the Postcards

Rio also hosts the Rio Coffee Nation festival on October 17–18, an opportunity for visitors interested in Brazil's coffee culture to explore the industry and its products. The city's Festival Moto Brasil runs October 16–18, adding another event to the weekend calendar. Travelers should consult the organizers' official pages for venue, ticketing, and program details. Meanwhile, São Paulo's art exhibitions and free public programming make the city an attractive option for travelers seeking urban culture. Rather than building an itinerary entirely around headline attractions, consider leaving room for a neighborhood cultural center, a local performance, or a food and coffee experience.

✈️ Before You Go: Entry Rules and Flight Changes

Travel documentation depends on nationality. Colombian adults visiting Brazil for tourism generally do not need a visa and can enter using a valid Colombian national identity card or passport, subject to applicable entry conditions. Colombian authorities have advised travelers to ensure that the document presented is valid for more than six months and to carry a return ticket. Requirements can differ for minors and other nationalities, so confirm the rules before departure. Source: Colombia's Foreign Ministry

Air connectivity is also changing. LATAM has announced an increase in its Fortaleza–Lisbon service from three to four weekly flights in October, rising to five weekly flights from November through March 2027. This could make Brazil's northeastern coast more convenient for travelers connecting through Portugal. Source: LATAM Airlines

No reliable nationwide fare increase can be established from these announcements alone. Compare fares across dates and airports, check baggage fees, and book early if your trip coincides with Carnival.

🧭 The Bottom Line

Brazil this week is a country balancing political uncertainty with a vibrant cultural calendar. The October 25 election deserves attention, but it is only one part of the story. From São Paulo's free cultural events to Rio's neighborhood samba rehearsals, visitors can find experiences that reveal the country beyond its familiar tourist image. The best approach is to stay informed, verify practical details, and leave room for the unexpected discoveries that make travel memorable.
