| Taylor Swift has consolidated her position as one of the most influential figures in the music industry not only through commercial success, but through her tenacious defense of creative control over her work. In May 2025, the singer announced the acquisition of the original masters of her first six albums, bringing an end to a dispute that began in 2019 and became a milestone in the broader conversation about artists’ rights and intellectual property in music. The controversy originated when Scott Borchetta, founder of Big Machine Records—the label Swift signed with at age 15—sold the company to Scooter Braun for approximately $300 million. The transaction included the masters of iconic albums such as Taylor Swift (2006), Fearless (2008), Speak Now (2010), Red (2012), 1989 (2014), and Reputation (2017). Swift publicly denounced the sale, arguing that she was not given the opportunity to purchase them and that Braun, with whom she had a history of conflict, represented a threat to her legacy. |
