Novak Djokovic Reveals Why He Will Never Be Friends with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer

Do Sporting Rivalries Unite Us or Divide Us?

By Jazmin Agudelo for Ruta Pantera on 10/17/2025 7:49:51 AM

In the vast landscape of sports, few rivalries have defined an era like tennis’s “Big Three”: Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer. These three titans have amassed 66 Grand Slam titles — Djokovic with a record 24, Nadal with 22, and Federer with 20 — dominating men’s tennis for two decades and elevating the sport to a nearly mythical level of excellence. However, in a recent interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Djokovic lifted the veil on an uncomfortable truth: despite their deep mutual respect, genuine friendship with Nadal and Federer is “impossible.” “Between rivals, it’s not possible,” the Serbian stated, adding that he has seen Nadal more than his own mother over the past 15 years. This confession invites a deeper reflection: do sporting rivalries forge unbreakable bonds, or do they create emotional barriers that cannot be crossed? Through curious facts and anecdotes, this article explores the complexity of this trinity — where admiration coexists with distance, and respect is woven into a tapestry of fierce competition.
Respect, But No Friendship Djokovic, now 38 and still active on the tour, does not hide his gratitude toward his peers. “Thanks to him [Nadal] and Federer, I grew and became who I am. That will unite us forever,” he declared in the interview. Yet, the intensity of their rivalry — which has produced 150 head-to-head matches among the three — has prevented any deeper connection. With Nadal, Djokovic shares an almost brotherly bond on court: they have faced each other 60 times, a record in the Open Era, with Djokovic leading 31–29. Both Geminis, they even dined together twice early in their careers, but, as Djokovic admits, “Even with him, friendship is impossible.” Regarding Federer, the distance is even greater. They played 50 matches, with Djokovic winning 27–23, but the Serb admits: “I’ve never been close to him. He had an extraordinary impact, but between rivals, friendship isn’t possible.” This revelation echoes the sentiment of Andy Murray, who regretted not forging closer ties with the trio despite competing for the same trophies. Djokovic emphasizes that they were never enemies — only rivals — a nuance that underscores the professionalism defining their legacy. But what keeps these relationships suspended in limbo? The answer lies in the psychology of competition: rivalry breeds admiration, but emotional closeness could dilute the ferocity required to win. An Unprecedented Dominance The “Big Three” didn’t just compete — they reinvented tennis. Between 2003 and 2023, they won 66 of 81 Grand Slams — an astonishing 81% dominance — leaving only 15 titles for everyone else. Federer broke through in 2003 with Wimbledon, Nadal followed in 2005 with Roland Garros — defeating Federer in his debut — and Djokovic joined the ranks in 2008 with his first Australian Open. Together, they held the No. 1 ranking for 947 weeks (18 years and 11 months), with Djokovic alone achieving a record 428 weeks at the top. Their head-to-head encounters are legendary: 110 matches in total, including 28 Grand Slam finals contested among them. Nadal leads on clay (winning 76% of his matches against the other two), Federer dominates on grass, and Djokovic reigns on hard courts. A curious fact: they are the only players in history to have defeated each other at all four Grand Slams. Another: from 2004 to 2021, the year-end No. 1 was always one of them — except in 2016. Their hegemony not only elevated the technical level of tennis — with endless rallies and impossible defenses — but also boosted the sport’s global popularity, inspiring new generations of fans and players. Off the court, dynamics added further intrigue. Federer and Nadal forged a deep friendship, even playing doubles together at the 2022 Laver Cup for Federer’s farewell. Djokovic, the Serbian “outsider,” admitted he initially felt less loved by fans: “I wasn’t supposed to be there,” he said, referring to the preference for Federer’s charisma and Nadal’s fiery spirit. Yet his resilience — such as saving two match points in the 2019 Wimbledon final against Federer — solidified his status as the GOAT for many.
