| The DOE report obscuring climate science: Politics, misinformation, and risks to the environmental future The document, promoted by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, seeks to downplay the severity of climate change, challenging scientific consensus and affecting environmental policies that also impact tourism and ecosystems in South America. When U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright claimed that climate science was a victim of “cancel culture,” he promised to open the debate and “unleash the truth.” However, a close review of the Department of Energy (DOE)-commissioned report reveals the opposite: a political maneuver that obscures evidence, discredits peer-reviewed studies, and revives discredited theories about global warming (Storrow, Harvey, Waldman, & Friedrich, 2025). 141-page report , written by five researchers marginalized by the scientific consensus — John Christy, Judith Curry, Steven Koonin, Ross McKitrick, and Roy Spencer — argues that climate change is “a challenge, not a catastrophe.” In contrast, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) brings together more than 700 experts and 62,000 reviews in its reports, confirming that human emissions harm health and the environment . The difference in rigor is abysmal. POLITICO 's investigation shows that the DOE document distorts IPCC quotes , omits key context, and cherry-picks data that downplays the effects of warming. For example, it argues that there is insufficient evidence on the link between climate change and hurricane intensity, omitting the IPCC's warning about extreme rainfall and rising ocean temperatures (Storrow et al., 2025). | ||||
| A political narrative with global impact The DOE not only misrepresented the data: its report was cited 16 times by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to justify the repeal of climate regulations . Thus, a small group of dissident voices managed to influence decisions that affect global environmental stability. Experts such as Camille Parmesan of the French National Institute for Scientific Research called the paper “a deliberate attempt to sabotage real science and replace it with unfounded ideology.” Wright’s strategy, according to POLITICO , relies on ties to conservative groups and the fossil fuel industry , such as the Heritage Foundation and the Heartland Institute , that seek to curb mitigation policies (Storrow et al., 2025). These decisions don't only impact the United States. In South America, where tropical ecosystems are vital to climate balance and eco-tourism, the delegitimization of climate science directly threatens conservation and adaptation efforts. The denial narrative weakens international agreements, puts natural destinations at risk, and exacerbates the vulnerability of regions dependent on sustainable tourism. | ||||
