Hot Air Ballooning Over Mendoza

An Adventure Amid Vineyards and Mountains

Ruta Pantera on 10/8/2025 10:14:16 AM

In Mendoza, this isn’t a fantasy—it’s the reality offered by a hot air balloon ride, blending adrenaline, serenity, and unparalleled panoramic views. Since 2018, pilot Javier Barozza has taken this activity to new heights with the country’s largest balloon, drawing tourists from around the world to Junín in eastern Mendoza. The History of Hot Air Ballooning in Mendoza Hot air ballooning in Mendoza isn’t a recent phenomenon but has gained momentum in recent years as part of the adventure tourism boom. Inspired by the Montgolfier brothers, who conducted the first manned balloon flight in France in 1783, this activity arrived in Argentina in the 1980s, finding its perfect niche in Mendoza thanks to its stable climate and diverse landscapes. Known for its Malbec wines and proximity to the Andes, the province offers ideal conditions: gentle winds, clear skies, and a topography that ensures safe, scenic flights. In 2018, Javier Barozza, a pilot with over 25 years of experience, founded Mendoza Balloons, introducing Argentina’s largest hot air balloon. This giant, equivalent to a nine-story building, requires 9,000 cubic meters of hot air to lift off. Barozza, who began flying at age 15, saw Junín as the ideal location, putting eastern Mendoza on the map for enotourism. He claims Mendoza ranks among the world’s top 10 cities for ballooning, thanks to its predictable weather and unique views. Since then, demand has surged, attracting Latin American and European tourists, especially after the pandemic when outdoor experiences gained popularity.
The Pilot Lifting Dreams Javier Barozza isn’t just a pilot—he’s a pioneer. With a background in various aircraft, Barozza shifted to balloons in 2018, investing in top-tier equipment certified by the ANAC (National Civil Aviation Administration). His balloon, capable of carrying up to 16 passengers, is Argentina’s largest and offers a unique regional experience. “Mendoza is ideal for its geography—vineyards, oases, and mountains,” Barozza says in interviews, highlighting how flights provide an unmatched perspective. In 2022, the company added a second balloon, expanding its capacity and drawing more visitors. Barozza emphasizes safety: all flights occur at dawn when winds are calm, and only under optimal conditions. His passion shines through each trip, blending historical anecdotes with technical insights, making passengers feel part of a legendary adventure. In 2025, with over 35 years of experience, Barozza continues to innovate, adding touches like a post-flight wine toast.
