Ascending to a Hidden Gem in Patagonia

By Jazmin Agudelo for Ruta Pantera on 10/10/2025 10:13:56 AM

A rugged trail winding through ancient forests, leading to a summit where a steaming crater reveals an emerald lake flanked by glaciers, all under the vast Patagonian sky. In Caviahue, Neuquén, Argentina, Volcán Copahue offers adventurers a trek that demands physical prowess but rewards with breathtaking surprises—a volcanic wonder on the Argentine-Chilean border. At 2,997 meters, this active stratovolcano isn't just a climb; it's a journey into geothermal marvels and raw natural beauty. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a curious explorer, Copahue's allure lies in its unpredictability and the therapeutic vibes of nearby hot springs.
The Geological and Historical Tapestry of Copahue Volcán Copahue, straddling the border between Argentina***s Neuquén Province and Chile***s Biobío Region, is a stratovolcano formed over millennia through explosive eruptions and lava flows. Its name derives from Mapudungun, the indigenous Mapuche language, meaning "sulfur water," a nod to the area***s abundant thermal springs. The volcano***s activity dates back to the Pleistocene, with its current cone shaped by Holocene eruptions. The crater, about 2 km wide, hosts a highly acidic lake (pH around 0.3) fed by glacial melt and hydrothermal fluids, creating a unique ecosystem of extremophiles. Historically, Copahue has been revered by indigenous peoples for its healing waters. The Mapuche used the thermal pools for therapeutic purposes long before European settlers arrived in the late 19th century. In 1937, the area gained fame when Dr. Antonio Scaravelli established the Copahue Thermal Complex, turning it into a spa destination. Eruptions have punctuated its timeline: a significant one in 2012 led to evacuations, ashfall affecting nearby towns, and a temporary closure of the ski resort. By 2025, monitoring by SERNAGEOMIN (Chile) and SEGEMAR (Argentina) ensures safety, with alert levels fluctuating based on seismic activity. The volcano***s dual nationality adds intrigue—climbers often cross invisible borders during the ascent. Today, Copahue is part of the Copahue Provincial Park, a protected area spanning 23,000 hectares, known for its biodiversity: araucaria forests, Andean condors, and rare flora adapted to volcanic soil. It***s a UNESCO Geopark candidate, highlighting its geological significance.
