| Parque Lage: explosions of action and urban art We kick off our film tour at the iconic Parque Lage, in the heart of Jardim Botânico, south of Rio! Imagine strolling through dreamy subtropical gardens until you come across a neoclassical mansion: one of the scenes from Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables (2010) was filmed right there. A setting so epic that you can almost hear the scene itself echoing among the trees. The park was also featured in Snoop Dogg's music video for "Beautiful," reinforcing its international visual appeal. As if that weren't enough, the main entrance, at 414 Rua Jardim Botânico, leads to a quiet café (Plage Café) in the inner courtyard, a perfect spot for taking photos and relaxing before exploring its paths. Open to the public, Parque Lage combines nature and culture in an accessible setting, ideal for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Ipanema without leaving the heart of the city. For the more adventurous, you can start the Corcovado climb here, a two-hour hike that culminates next to the imposing Christ the Redeemer, blending the magic of cinema with the majesty of Rio's landscapes. Located about 22 kilometers from Galeão International Airport, getting to Parque Lage is fairly easy. You can take a taxi or ride-hailing app for approximately $8.79 to $11.42 USD, or choose a more economical option by combining bus and metro. From Botafogo station, a surface connection takes you very close to the park, next to Hospital da Lagoa. Although travel time may vary depending on traffic, the experience upon arrival is always worth it: a magical spot at the foot of Christ the Redeemer, where the rainforest blends with art and history. Starting your Rio adventure here is like hitting play on a movie that promises unforgettable moments. | ||||

Lapa and its arches: twilight romance Now we head to the more bohemian heart of Rio: Lapa, with its famous Arcos da Lapa (the old Aqueduto da Carioca) as the backdrop. Did you know that this colonial viaduct of 42 arches was the setting for Bella and Edward***s honeymoon in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 (2011)? There, the two move between bars and street sambadromes, capturing all the party vibes that pervade the city. Located about 19 kilometers from Galeão International Airport, you can easily reach the Arcos da Lapa. You can take a taxi or order a ride through an app for about $7.95 to $10.75 USD, or if you prefer to save money, combine the bus and metro. From Carioca station, you just have to walk a short distance and you***re right there: this famous aqueduct, one of the most authentic symbols of old Rio and the scene of Bella and Edward. While strolling through Praça Cardeal Câmara, take a stroll down the Selarón Steps, the multicolored staircase designed by Jorge Selarón that connects Lapa to Santa Teresa. Although it didn***t appear in the series, it***s a must-see for any epic photo op. And to top it all off, Lapa offers a safe nightlife and plenty of English-speaking guides—perfect if you want a cultural tour without missing a thing. Getting there is very simple, as the Selarón Steps are only about 615 meters from the Arcos da Lapa, which means you can walk there in about 6 minutes without getting lost. Christ the Redeemer on the big animated screen No trip to Rio is complete without a visit to Christ the Redeemer, the city***s true icon. And although the animated film Rio (2011) wasn***t actually filmed here, its creators did visit Corcovado to soak up its grandeur and the incredible views of Copacabana and Ipanema. In fact, it was that trip that inspired the explosion of colors and vibrant scenery you see in the film. Imagine this: a nearly 38-meter-high tower (yes, 8 meters for the pedestal and 30 meters for the figure) with its arms wide open, embracing Rio de Janeiro from the top of Corcovado, 709 meters above sea level. Created by Paul Landowski and Heitor da Silva Costa, this marvel overlooks the Rio skyline and offers you movie-like views. The best part? Getting there is an adventure: you take the Cosme Velho funicular or join one of those minibuses that depart from Copacabana, and as you ascend, you feel like you***re the protagonist of your own film. Who in their right mind would miss something like that? Getting to Rio de Janeiro is easy thanks to Galeão International Airport (GIG), which receives direct flights from the Americas, Europe, and other regions. From the airport to Copacabana, the road distance is approximately 25 km, and a taxi or ride-hailing app can cost between $11 and $14 USD, with an estimated duration of 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. If you***re headed to Ipanema, the distance is similar, around 25 km, and the taxi fare varies between $12 and $15 USD, with a comparable travel time. For more economical options, there are direct buses from the airport to these neighborhoods, with fares ranging from $1.50 to $2 USD, although the travel time can be approximately an hour. Rio de Janeiro is definitely the perfect place to immerse yourself in Brazilian and world cinema, between the beaches and the mountains. | |||
