On every trip, there are small moments that surprise you beyond what appears in the guidebooks. It could be a high-pitched song that breaks the silence of a mountain sunrise, a flash of red that fleetingly crosses an urban park, or the silhouette of a bird silhouetted against the horizon on the beach. These are moments that spark curiosity: What species is that? What is its story? Does it live only here or in other parts of the world? Answering these questions no longer depends solely on carrying a heavy field manual or being an ornithology expert. Today, technology is becoming an ally of travelers and nature lovers. Among the most notable tools is Merlin. Bird ID, a free app created by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Its proposal is as simple as it is powerful: allowing anyone to identify birds instantly. A digital travel companion The first thing that stands out about Merlin is that it's not just an app for ornithology experts. It's designed for any curious traveler. At its core, it serves a very clear purpose: to identify birds in real time or from photos, audio, or simple descriptions. Its operation combines data analytics, millions of scientific records, and the constant input of a global community of birdwatchers.

When you first launch the app, the first thing it asks you to do is register your email address. It then suggests enabling location access, as this information is essential for displaying the species that live in your area. It also offers the option to activate notifications so you receive alerts about nearby birds, although this option is up to the user. A simple and attractive interface Merlin ***s main screen greets the user with the "bird of the day," a prominent species that serves as inspiration and a gateway to the winged world. Below it are the three main buttons for choosing how to identify a bird: Step by Step, Sound ID, and Photo ID.
