“In an era when politics is often communicated through imagery, this portrait conveys a clear message: closeness, identity, and belonging. Iván Cepeda's Political Trajectory

A Career Built on Human Rights

By Jazmin Agudelo for Ruta Pantera on 6/10/2026 2:53:39 PM

Unlike many Colombian political leaders whose careers were primarily developed within electoral machines or traditional party structures, Iván Cepeda built much of his public recognition through his work as a human rights advocate and supporter of victims of the armed conflict. His personal story is deeply intertwined with Colombia's history of political violence. He is the son of Manuel Cepeda Vargas, a senator from the Patriotic Union who was assassinated in 1994 in a crime that was later recognized by international bodies as a serious human rights violation.

Following his father's murder, Cepeda emerged as one of the most prominent voices defending victims of political violence and state crimes. Rather than retreating from public life, he dedicated much of his career to promoting historical memory, truth-seeking processes, and reparations for victims. Long before entering Congress, he had already gained national recognition through his work with social organizations and movements seeking to amplify the voices of groups that had historically been excluded from Colombian political life.

His subsequent roles as a member of the House of Representatives, a senator, and a facilitator in peace dialogues with the FARC and later the ELN helped solidify a political image centered on the pursuit of negotiated solutions to armed conflict. Supporters view this commitment to dialogue as evidence of democratic leadership and a willingness to address the root causes of violence. Critics, however, argue that such positions have at times placed him too close to actors involved in the conflict. Regardless of one's political perspective, Cepeda's career has been defined by a consistent focus on human rights, transitional justice, and democratic participation, making him one of the most distinctive figures in contemporary Colombian politics.

The Persistence of Fear Toward the Left in Colombia

One of the factors that has historically shaped Colombian politics is the association many citizens developed between left-wing politics and guerrilla organizations. For more than half a century, Colombia's armed conflict deeply influenced the country's political culture. Anti-communist rhetoric, ideological polarization, and the violence associated with insurgent groups contributed to an environment in which many voters came to view progressive political projects with suspicion. As a result, numerous left-leaning movements struggled to distinguish themselves from armed organizations operating outside the law. This created a lasting perception that proposals involving social reform, economic redistribution, labor protections, or expanded social rights could somehow threaten democracy, private property, or national stability. Even though Colombia has changed significantly since the signing of the 2016 peace agreement with the FARC, many of these narratives remain deeply embedded in public discourse. Some political analysts argue that this historical context helps explain why left-wing candidates often face higher levels of initial distrust than their conservative counterparts. In Cepeda's case, his involvement in peace negotiations and his defense of dialogue as a political tool have been interpreted by supporters as evidence of a commitment to democratic conflict resolution. Opponents, however, often view those same positions as signs of excessive leniency toward former armed actors.

This debate illustrates the extent to which Colombia's collective memory continues to shape electoral decisions. More than a decade after major peace initiatives began transforming the political landscape, many voters still evaluate candidates through the lens of the country's long and painful history of violence. Understanding this reality is essential to understanding both the opportunities and challenges facing any progressive political movement in Colombia today.

Social Media, Disinformation, and Political Simplification

The transformation of the information ecosystem represents one of the most significant challenges facing modern democracies. In Colombia, as in many countries around the world, social media platforms have become the primary source of political information for millions of citizens. This shift has undeniably democratized access to information, allowing individuals to engage directly with public debates and political actors without relying exclusively on traditional media outlets. At the same time, however, this transformation has facilitated the rapid spread of misinformation, rumors, manipulated content, and emotionally charged narratives designed to provoke immediate reactions. Complex discussions about inequality, institutional reform, human rights, healthcare, education, or economic development often struggle to compete with simplistic messages crafted for maximum engagement. The algorithms that drive digital platforms tend to reward content that generates strong emotional responses rather than thoughtful analysis. As a result, political debates are increasingly framed through polarized narratives that divide society into heroes and villains, reducing nuanced issues to binary choices. In such an environment, candidates whose political identity is rooted in policy discussions and institutional reforms may find themselves at a disadvantage compared to those who rely on provocative slogans or highly emotional messaging.

For politicians like Cepeda, the challenge lies in communicating complex ideas within a media landscape where public attention is measured in seconds. A carefully developed policy proposal may receive far less visibility than a controversial quote, a misleading headline, or a viral video taken out of context. This dynamic does not affect only one political ideology; it has become a structural feature of contemporary political communication. As democracies continue adapting to the digital age, the ability of citizens to critically evaluate information and engage with nuanced political arguments will remain a crucial factor in determining the quality of public debate and democratic decision-making.
The Search for Consensus as a Political Strategy

One of the most notable aspects of Cepeda's recent political approach has been his effort to engage moderate and centrist sectors of Colombian society. After years of intense polarization between the political left and right, many voters appear increasingly exhausted by constant confrontation and ideological conflict. Growing frustration with political division has created an opportunity for candidates who emphasize dialogue, institutional stability, and consensus-building. Within this context, Cepeda has repeatedly stressed the importance of constructing broad national agreements capable of bringing together different political sectors around shared goals. In recent public statements, he has distanced himself from proposals that generated concern among moderate voters, such as the possibility of convening a constituent assembly. Instead, he has emphasized that any significant institutional transformation should occur through democratic consensus and within the framework of Colombia's existing constitutional order.

This strategic shift reflects an effort to broaden his electoral appeal while presenting himself as a leader capable of governing a politically diverse country. Supporters view this position as evidence of political maturity, pragmatism, and an understanding of the country's current realities. Critics, meanwhile, argue that it represents an electoral strategy designed primarily to attract centrist voters who may be hesitant to support a traditional left-wing platform.

Regardless of how one interprets this evolution, it reflects a broader recognition that meaningful reforms in Colombia are unlikely to succeed without substantial political agreement. The country's history demonstrates that durable institutional changes generally require support that extends beyond a single ideological bloc. By emphasizing dialogue and consensus, Cepeda seeks to position himself as a candidate capable not only of representing a political movement but also of building bridges across a deeply divided society.

Whether this strategy ultimately proves successful remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that the search for consensus has become a central component of his political message and reflects broader discussions about how Colombia can move beyond cycles of polarization toward a more inclusive democratic future.
