| Unlike many Colombian political leaders whose careers were primarily developed within electoral machines or traditional party structures, Iván Cepeda built much of his public recognition through his work as a human rights advocate and supporter of victims of the armed conflict. His personal story is deeply intertwined with Colombia's history of political violence. He is the son of Manuel Cepeda Vargas, a senator from the Patriotic Union who was assassinated in 1994 in a crime that was later recognized by international bodies as a serious human rights violation.
Following his father's murder, Cepeda emerged as one of the most prominent voices defending victims of political violence and state crimes. Rather than retreating from public life, he dedicated much of his career to promoting historical memory, truth-seeking processes, and reparations for victims. The algorithms that drive digital platforms tend to reward content that generates strong emotional responses rather than thoughtful analysis. As a result, political debates are increasingly framed through polarized narratives that divide society into heroes and villains, reducing nuanced issues to binary choices. In such an environment, candidates whose political identity is rooted in policy discussions and institutional reforms may find themselves at a disadvantage compared to those who rely on provocative slogans or highly emotional messaging. For politicians like Cepeda, the challenge lies in communicating complex ideas within a media landscape where public attention is measured in seconds. A carefully developed policy proposal may receive far less visibility than a controversial quote, a misleading headline, or a viral video taken out of context.
