Five New Creative Hubs in America

Cities Where Creativity, Technology and Community are Creating New Opportunities for Digital Nomads

By Estefanía Muriel for Ruta Pantera on 9/28/2026 11:40:27 AM

Where does a creative person go today when they no longer necessarily want to live in New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, São Paulo, or Buenos Aires? The answer is beginning to change. In different parts of the Americas, cities are emerging that, while not always belonging to the traditional circuit of cultural capitals, are creating conditions to attract talent, entrepreneurship, technology, art, and new ways of working.

It's not just about places with museums, festivals, or a well-established art scene. The phenomenon is broader: collaborative spaces, entrepreneurship programs, audiovisual industries, technology, universities, investment, and communities are emerging, capable of transforming a city into a place where an idea can find connections and opportunities. For a digital nomad, this changes the question: the destination is no longer just where to spend a few weeks, but where they could stay long enough to create something.

A preliminary exploration of the hemisphere reveals five particularly interesting cases: Medellín, Bentonville and its surrounding area in Northwest Arkansas, Guadalajara, Córdoba, and Valparaíso. They are different models, but they share one characteristic: they are trying to transform creativity and knowledge into economic activity and new forms of urban life.

Medellín - Colombia: From Technology to the Creative Economy

Medellín is perhaps one of the clearest examples of this transition. The city no longer presents its transformation solely around technology and entrepreneurship. By 2026, the Mayor's Office characterizes its creative and cultural economy based on activities such as software development, advertising, design, audiovisual production, new media, and heritage. Its Medellín Creativa program offers training, support, incentives, financing, and market connections to strengthen ventures in the sector.

The video demonstrates the scope of this strategy. In 2026, the city launched new incentives for film and audiovisual productions, including cash rebate programs , international distribution, and support for businesses and talent development. The Film Commission also aims to connect producers with buyers, distributors, platforms, and investors. For remote professionals, the opportunity lies precisely at the intersection of technology, creativity, professional services, and community.
Bentonville - United States: The Unexpected Place

At first glance, Bentonville seems like an odd choice. It's a small Arkansas town internationally associated with Walmart, not the creative economy. However, its cultural and entrepreneurial transformation makes it one of the most unique cases on the continent.

In June 2026, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art expanded its facilities by 114,000 square feet, while The Momentary serves as a multidisciplinary space dedicated to visual and performing arts, gastronomy, festivals, and artist residencies. Simultaneously, the Northwest Arkansas region is developing a thriving entrepreneurial and startup community.

The combination is unusual: large corporations, capital, contemporary art, gastronomy, cycling, and nature. For a creative professional, Bentonville raises an interesting question: is it necessary to live in a megacity to find a community capable of driving a project forward?

Guadalajara, Mexico: When Technology Meets Art

Guadalajara represents another model: a city where digital industries and creativity have been converging for years. UNESCO identifies a media arts ecosystem there, comprised of around 1,200 companies and more than 24,000 direct and indirect jobs. The city uses festivals, cultural policies, and innovation hubs to connect media arts with other creative sectors.

Its appeal for digital nomads lies precisely in that mix. Design, technology, digital media, literature, and entertainment can coexist within the same ecosystem. It's not just a city where you can work with a computer: it's a place where technology can become a tool for producing culture and new content.

Cordoba - Argentina: A University City that Is Building an Ecosystem

Córdoba offers a different story. Its strength lies in the combination of university, technological entrepreneurship, and emerging creative industries. The Córdoba Startup Monitor recorded 334 technology-based ventures in 2025, a 10% increase compared to the previous year, while in 2026 the city continued to update its map of startups, investments, exports, and employment.

The city is also connecting businesses, universities, and public organizations through clusters, including Córdoba Creativa, which focuses on advertising. And in 2026, it launched Inside Córdoba , an initiative that allows international students and digital nomads to connect with companies and institutions within the productive, technological, and entrepreneurial ecosystem. For those who work remotely, this direct connection with the business community is especially valuable.

Valparaíso - Chile: Turning Identity into Future

Valparaíso has a distinct advantage: a deeply rooted cultural identity. But now it's trying to transform that tradition into a contemporary creative economy. In April 2026, the Valparaíso Creative Region Corporation was established, bringing together universities, galleries, museums, immersive technologies, audiovisual production, theater, and cultural organizations to consolidate a productive creative ecosystem.

The city also approved its 2025–2030 Municipal Culture Plan, which explicitly includes the promotion of creative economies, while new programs fund cultural initiatives and support local entrepreneurs. For a creative traveler, Valparaíso offers something difficult to artificially create: a city whose identity, architecture, art, and community life are integral to the creative process itself.

The New Map

The five cases are not the same. Medellín is committed to connecting technology and creative industries; Bentonville demonstrates how art, capital, and nature can converge in a small city; Guadalajara blends digital media and culture; Córdoba builds bridges between entrepreneurship, knowledge, and creativity; and Valparaíso attempts to transform cultural identity into sustainable economic activity.

What they share is more important than their differences: community, meeting places, institutions, talent, and new professional opportunities. For digital nomads, this opens a different perspective on the journey. The question is no longer just where to find inspiration, but where an idea can find the people, the tools, and the ecosystem needed to become a project.
