Mamirauá: The Amazon Where the Forest Becomes a River

Explore Brazil’s Flooded Forests, Remarkable Wildlife, and Riverside Communities Shaped by the Changing Waters.

By Marbel Montoya for Ruta Pantera on 10/18/2026 7:52:13 AM

In the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve, in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, the landscape changes throughout the year. During the flood season, water spreads across vast areas of forest, allowing boats to navigate among trees that stand on dry ground when river levels fall. This transformation makes Mamirauá one of the Amazon’s most distinctive destinations for discovering the connections between rivers, wildlife, and local communities.

The reserve lies in the Middle Solimões region, near the meeting of the Solimões and Japurá rivers. Covering approximately 1.1 million hectares, it protects an extensive area of várzea, a type of floodplain forest periodically inundated by Amazonian rivers carrying nutrient-rich sediments.

Unlike forests that remain on dry land, these environments change significantly with the seasons. Channels expand, new navigation routes appear, and wooded areas become temporarily submerged. For visitors, traveling by small boat offers a different perspective on the Amazon, revealing a forest explored not only from its banks but also from within its flooded landscape.
Wildlife That Makes Mamirauá Unique

One of the region’s most distinctive animals is the white uakari, an Amazonian primate recognized by its bright red face and pale coat. Its distribution is closely associated with the flooded forests of this part of Brazil, making Mamirauá particularly important for its conservation.

Amazon river dolphins are another defining feature of the reserve. Unlike marine dolphins, these mammals are adapted to freshwater environments. During seasonal floods, they can move among submerged trees and vegetation in search of food, using areas that become inaccessible when water levels recede.

Mamirauá is also home to Amazonian manatees, caimans, numerous bird species, and a remarkable diversity of fish. Wildlife sightings vary throughout the year as animals respond to changing water depths, food availability, and habitat conditions. Exploring the reserve therefore requires patience and, ideally, the guidance of local experts familiar with its waterways and wildlife.

Life Along the Rivers

For riverside communities, changing water levels shape everyday life. Fishing, transportation, and access to homes can all vary from one season to the next. Boats are not simply a way for visitors to explore the reserve; they are an essential means of connecting households, communities, and workplaces.

Mamirauá also represents a conservation model closely linked to the people who live in the region. Its sustainable development reserve framework seeks to protect biodiversity while allowing the responsible use of natural resources. Fisheries management, research, traditional knowledge, and community-based tourism all contribute to this effort.

Visitors can explore sections of flooded forest by boat, discovering the landscape and observing wildlife without relying on terrestrial trails. Conditions change throughout the year, so planning with local operators and checking navigation conditions before traveling are important. Maintaining a respectful distance from animals and following guides’ instructions helps minimize disturbance to wildlife.

Mamirauá offers a distinctive way to experience the Amazon: not as a uniform expanse of trees and rivers, but as a landscape transformed by the seasons, where water influences the movements of wildlife and the daily lives of local communities. Its value lies in this combination of biodiversity, riverside culture, and a natural environment whose character changes with the rising and falling waters.
