La escritora y dramaturga puertorriqueña Quiara Alegría Hudes, ganadora del Premio Pulitzer, irrumpe en la narrativa con The White Hot, una novela que desafía las estructuras de género en torno al cuidado. Desde su potente declaración —«Cuando una mujer se va, siempre hay otra mujer que la cuida. El cuidado como herencia y carga invisible En América Latina, el cuidado familiar —de hijos, ancianos o enfermos— recae desproporcionadamente sobre las mujeres. Según estudios regionales, ellas dedican el triple de tiempo al trabajo doméstico y de cuidado no remunerado que los hombres. En países como Colombia, México o Perú, esa labor sigue considerándose un deber moral y no un derecho social compartido. Mientras tanto, en Canadá o Estados Unidos, los sistemas públicos de cuidado —guarderías, licencias parentales o apoyo comunitario— ofrecen un respaldo institucional que, si bien no elimina la desigualdad, distribuye parte de esa carga al Estado y no solo al cuerpo femenino. Esa disparidad cultural explica por qué, en América Latina, el cuidado se vive como una “carga invisible”, un sacrificio que limita el desarrollo personal y profesional de las mujeres. Como sugiere Hudes en su entrevista con El País, su propia abuela «Pasó su vida cuidando a sus hijos, luego a sus nietos y luego a sus bisnietos. ¡Incluso cuidó a los hijos de otras personas!» (Hudes, 2025). Este retrato resume generaciones enteras de mujeres que aprendieron a amar cuidando, incluso cuando nadie las cuidaba a ellas. Esa herencia emocional, tejida entre sacrificio y silencio, sigue marcando la vida de millones en América Latina. La rebelión de las que deciden irse En The White Hot, Hudes imagina la historia de una madre adolescente que decide abandonar a su hija.
