The Habano Festival

A Tradition Under the Shadow of Crisis

By Jazmin Agudelo for Ruta Pantera on 6/3/2026 6:00:22 AM

With its indefinite postponement in 2026, the emblematic event of Cuban tobacco illustrates both its global prestige and the economic pressures that threaten its future. In the heart of Havana, every February used to ignite a celebration that fused tradition, luxury and passion: the Habano Festival. This year, however, the scenario changed drastically. Scheduled for February 23 to 27, 2026, the festival which was going to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Cohiba, Cuba’s flagship brand was postponed indefinitely by Habanos S.A., the state company that dominates the premium tobacco market. The official reason: to preserve the “high standards of quality and experience” in the midst of an acute energy crisis, marked by constant blackouts and fuel shortages. This decision is not only a logistical setback; it reflects the deep tensions that Cuba faces, where an economic blockade intensified by the United States has exacerbated chronic problems, affecting everything from transportation to daily production. For cigar aficionados, the festival represents more than an event: it is a window into the soul of Cuban tobacco, a product that generates hundreds of millions in foreign currency but now struggles to maintain its shine.

Historically, the Habano Festival attracts more than 1,300 participants from about 70 countries, including distributors, experts, journalists and collectors. It is not just a party; it is an economic engine that injects vitality into the tobacco industry, with humidor auctions reaching millions and exclusive launches that dictate global trends. But in 2026, the Cuban reality imposed itself. The island faces one of the worst crises in decades, with a GDP contracted by 15% in the last five years, shortages of food and medicine, and a massive emigration that drains skilled labor. The postponed event, which was previously canceled only during the pandemic in 2021 and 2022, underscores how even the most profitable traditions are not immune. Global aficionados lament the loss, but for Cuba it is a blow to a key source of foreign income, especially when tourism another pillar has fallen by 60% compared with 2019 due to travel warnings and flight suspensions.

How to Participate and What a Typical Edition Includes

Although 2026 remains on pause, understanding how the festival works offers clues about its appeal and why its absence hurts. Participating is not as simple as buying a ticket online; the process is exclusive and depends on the global network of Habanos S.A. Those interested must contact authorized local distributors such as Intertabak AG in Switzerland or premium retailers in Europe and Asia to express interest. There is no general public sale; passes are assigned through these channels, and in past editions such as 2025, they sold out months in advance due to high demand. For 2026, a record interest was rumored because of the Cohiba anniversary, but the crisis truncated everything. If it resumes in future editions, the advice is to act early: send an email or call your local Habanos distributor to sign up for waiting lists.

The cost is another key factor, and it varies depending on the chosen package, but a full experience is around 4,000 euros (about 4,300 U.S. dollars), based on 2025 prices. This covers a five-day program full of immersive activities. For example, the welcome night around 550 euros is usually dedicated to a highlighted brand, with elegant dinners in iconic places such as the Cubanacán Protocol Hall. Visits to plantations in Pinar del Río, the mecca of Cuban tobacco, cost about 175 euros and allow visitors to closely observe the cultivation of premium leaves, from planting to harvest, guided by expert farmers. Educational seminars (425 euros) delve into topics such as pairings with rum or coffee, Habano history and tasting techniques, taught by master rollers and specialists.

The heart of the festival is its social and commercial events. The trade fair, with more than 80 exhibitors and 2,000 visitors, is free with the full pass and offers opportunities to buy limited editions, accessories and even personalized cigars. Practical rolling classes teach you how to roll your own Habano, while the International Habanos World Challenge tests knowledge in a global competition. The intermediate nights (800 euros) and the final gala often exceeding 1,000 euros are the climax: dedicated to launches such as new Cohiba or H. Upmann vitolas, they include musical performances, auctions where handcrafted humidors sell for hundreds of thousands, and pairings with premium liquors. All this not only educates; it fosters networks that drive global sales. For many, the value lies in exclusivity: you return with rare cigars, deep knowledge and connections in the industry. However, in 2026, this investment remains suspended, leaving distributors and aficionados recalculating plans.

The Cuban Tobacco Business Today

Behind the glamour of the festival lies a robust but vulnerable business: the Cuban tobacco industry, led by Habanos S.A., a joint venture between the Cuban state and international partners. In 2024, it generated 827 million dollars in revenue, 16% more than the previous year, exporting to markets such as China (the main buyer), Spain and France. It does not sell in the United States due to the embargo, which limits its potential, but global demand exceeds supply, keeping prices high and maintaining an aura of exclusivity. Production involves thousands of farmers in regions such as Vuelta Abajo, where volcanic soil and ideal climate produce unique leaves. Artisan rollers in factories such as La Corona or El Laguito manually roll each cigar, with strict quality controls that ensure consistency.

However, Cuba’s current economic difficulties are eroding this century-old tradition. The 2026 crisis, driven by the U.S. blockade that restricts oil shipments from Venezuela and Mexico, has caused widespread blackouts and fuel shortages, paralyzing transport and factories. Economists such as Daniel Torralbas warn that energy-dependent sectors, such as agriculture and manufacturing, suffer the most: scarce fertilizers, storms intensified by climate change and the emigration of young workers have reduced harvests. In 2025, tobacco exports fell below projections, and global prices of Cuban cigars have risen, making a Cohiba Behike cost hundreds of dollars per unit. Controversies add pressure: reports of forced labor in prisons and scrutiny over investors such as Chen Zhi, linked to fraud, have damaged reputation, although Habanos denies irregularities.

The impact is multifaceted. For Cuba, tobacco represents around 10% of exports, vital for foreign currency that finances essential imports. The postponement of the festival deprives the country of direct income millions in tourism and sales and global visibility, exacerbating the economic contraction. Tourism, undermined by travel warnings from countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom, has fallen drastically, and the tobacco industry feels the blow: fewer visitors mean fewer sales in duty-free stores. In the long term, experts predict greater shortages of cigars, even higher prices and possible reforms, such as attracting foreign investment or diversifying crops. But Cuban resilience shines: farmers innovate with sustainable techniques, and the Habano maintains its status as “the best in the world.” For aficionados, this means treasuring existing stocks; for Cuba, balancing tradition with survival.

The Habano Festival is not just an event; it is a barometer of Cuban vitality. Its pause in 2026 invites reflection: can this tradition endure in the face of adverse winds? While the island navigates its crisis, the world hopes that the smoke of a good Habano will continue to rise, a symbol of perseverance.
